Event Offers Unfiltered, Real-Time Industry Insight for Agents, Editors, Publishing Pros

New York City – Featuring sharp insights, peer connection, and practical tools for navigating the business of books, the 2025 People of Publishing Conference, hosted by the Association of American Literary Agents (AALA), will bring together literary agents, editors, and publishing staff on Sept. 17 in New York City.

Held at the New York Academy of Medicine, this one-day, in-person event highlights publishing industry trends, business realities, and professional skills. The conference provides a unique intersection for people behind the books, from early-career to mid-career staff preparing to lead the future.

“What sets this conference apart? It’s not about hypotheticals but the real work being done right now—and how we can do it better, together. With a mix of high-level strategy, peer connection, skill-building sessions, and candid conversations, this is a rare space for publishing professionals to get smarter, bolder, and more grounded in their craft,” said Regina Brooks AALA president and co-founder of the event.

The conference offers publishing professionals the chance to hear directly from decision-makers, while building valuable industry connections and relationships. Sessions include a discussion with CEOs from Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, and Hachette, on navigating the breakneck speed of the industry; an exploration of trends with some of publishing’s top leaders; a “Financial Fluency” workshop; and a panel discussion about the legal implications of book banning.

Registration is now open at peopleofpublishing.org. Space is limited and group rates are available for companies registering 10 or more participants. For press, speaker, and sponsorship inquiries, or group registration, contact us at conference@aalitagents.org

2025 People of Publishing Conference FAQ

Why attend the 2025 AALA People of Publishing Conference?

This is a premier professional development opportunity in the publishing industry: the chance to be proactive about advancing your knowledge, skills and contacts. You’ll learn best practices from peers and respected leaders, meet colleagues in person and make new connections in your genre, and take part in networking in an unmatched concentration of agents, editors and publishing professionals.

Who should attend the Conference?

This year’sPeople of Publishing Conference is focused on professional development for professionals working in various capacities in the book publishing industry: agents, and those working in agencies and on behalf of agents, as well as editors in publishing houses, and other staff members working at publishing companies.

Is this the same as the U.S. Book Show? What’s the difference between the two events?

After two successful years of cohosting AALA Day within the U.S. Book Show, we’re excited to evolve the concept into an independent gathering in 2025. This new standalone event allows us to deepen our focus on agent and editor career development while continuing to celebrate the spirit of connection that defined our earlier partnership with Publishers Weekly who will continue to produce the U.S. Book Show separately.
